The Berlin Wall Crumbles

The fall of Communism must rank as one of the most startling events of my life time. I grew up in a bi-polor world where two superpowers competed for dominance. By the end of the 1980's I had an inkling that Communism in Russia and Eastern Europe was a house of cards waiting for a western breeze. I didn't realize that the collapse would be so near and so total.

In the summer of 1967 I visited my brother Jack in Berlin. He was in the Air Force. I made several visits to the Berlin Wall. With the strength of Russia, it seemed like the wall would last forever. I returned to Germany in 1980 as an Army Officer and practiced tactics to combat the Communist hordes. How odd that it should pass with such amazing speed. The fall of Communism made Boris Yletsin happy!

here I am in Berlin in 1967 by the gates of Brandenburg
