Same Sex Marriage Legal in Massachusetts
~ May 17, 2004 ~

The speed at which this happened amazed me. I was following the story in 2003 when the Massachusetts court ruled that in 6 months same-sex marriage would be legalized. This is when the issue really came into focus for me. The issue of gay marriage was a small part of the Democratic primary campaign in February before Kerry clinched the nominaton. Then in march, the new mayor of San Francisco, Gavin Newsome, began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. I wrote one letter to the editor of the SF Chronicle and one to the editor of the Marin IJ. Neither was published. I preached a sermon on "What Marriage is Not" and on the same day (April 18) walked down to 19th Street to participate in a "traditional marriage" rally. I also centered one of my Liberty Newsletters on the issue of same-sex marriage.

Only time will tell where this issue will end, sigh.
