Phase Three
Seminar and Crusade in Butare
~ July 19 to 22 ~

Phase 3 (July 18 to 22). A team of four traveled to the provincial capitol of Butare. On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, I led a seminar for about 200 local pastors. The teaching was based on Jesus on Leadership, Developing Servant Leaders by C. Gene Wilkes. I augmented this with other material. The last meeting I focused on James 3: "From whence come wars and fightings among you?" While in Butare there were unusual rain storms in this dry season. Our pastors would pray in the morning that the rain would stop so that people would attend our evening crusades. I talked about this rain problem to a local Baptist missionary. She informed me that farmers were praying for this same rain. Summer rain grows grass for cows. After discussing this "theological dilemma of praying", our pastors agreed that rain could fall at night, but that in the daytime rain would stop. Incidentally, not one drop of rain fell during any of the outdoor crusades. On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening, I proclaimed the Gospel at a local soccer stadium. I preached three parables on successive days. First was the Parable of the Prodigal Son, then the Good Samaritan, and then the Sheep and the Goats. The response was great and many people came forward to accept Christ. On the final evening when I preached on the sheep and the goats, I noticed a small herd of cows walking up a nearby hill. I remarked to my interpreter, "If only some sheep and goats would appear." Just as I was walking up to the platform a boy appeared on another hill leading a flock of sheep and goats. Coincidence? Providence? Miracle? Whatever one calls it, I was amazed as I gestured toward my grazing visual aids.
