Mission to Rwanda

Phase Six
Seminar and Crusade at Byumba Refugee camp
~ August 1 to 3 ~

Phase 6 (August 1 to 3). We spent the next three days of our mission at a UN Refugee camp near Byumba, Rwanda. This camp was for people displaced by war in the Congo. In the daytime I led a seminar for camp pastors. I repeated much of the material that I presented in Butare. I was able to use my new knowledge about the drum in explaining the status of Satan: "He is still making a lot of noise, but Jesus captured his drum when he descended into hell. Now the devil is a defeated foe." During three evenings I preached at the camp. I taught the life of Jesus in three one-hour sessions. The first session dealt with the birth, childhood, baptism, and temptation of Jesus up to the confession of Peter that Jesus is the Christ. The second session focused on the parable of the Good Samaritan, the Woman at the Well, and the Woman in adultery. The experience seemed Biblical. As I taught of the adulterous woman (John chapter 9), I bent over and wrote on the dust of the ground. A few minutes later I walked a few steps to pick up a casting stone. On the third evening, I quickly related the last supper, death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. The camp was full of children with little to do. They were drawn to us foreigners like magnets. I could relate to Jesus moving off-shore in a little boat to put some distance between him and the crowd. I could also see why the disciples chased away little children. There was a pastor with a stick whose sole job was to keep the kids at least ten feet away from our presentation. Kim spent much of her time singing and playing with the children of the camp. She twisted her ankle teaching "duck, duck, goose". The refugees in the camp were in great need and we were truly blessed to bring light into such a place of darkness.
