Phase Five
Sidetrips to the Yamata Memorial, the Butare museum,
the Kigali Market, and a Mission Church
~ July 30 and 31 ~

Phase 5 (July 30 & 31). We enjoyed two days of sight seeing. On a Monday we went to a village near Kigali called Yamata. There is a genocide memorial to over 20,000 people who were killed on the grounds of a Catholic church. We saw a sanctuary stained on the floors, walls, and ceiling with blood. I walked into an underground mausoleum filled with human bones. I wrote in the guest book "No Jesus, No Peace / Know Jesus, Know Peace". On Monday we also visited the downtown market in Kigali to buy souvenirs. On Tuesday, we visited the national museum on our return visit to Butare. At the museum, I learned that the drum is the symbolic power of a leader. If ever the king's drum is stolen, then the king is robbed of his power. In the evening we visited a small mission church that is sending Rwandan missionaries to the Batwa (Pigmy) people near the Congo border.
