When I think of 1st Grade, 2nd Grade and 3rd Grade, I see in my mind's eye Dick, Jane, Sally, Spot, and Puff. I recite the incantation "Oh, look. See Sally. See Sally jump up and down" and I am transported back to 1956. A glance at the covers of the texts give me a warm rush of nostalgia.
We fondly remember our FIRSTS; our first toys, our first romance, our first car. These were the first words that I ever read. Were the books good? That's hard to judge. The words were easy and the pictures illustrated the words. The fact that I can look back and remember with fondness must speak to the durability of the texts.
