When I attended Tiburan Baptist Church in the 1990s, I was drawn to Southern Baptist Disater
Relief. It was a way to serve. However I was busy attending seminary, then I got deflected into my Korean ministry in San Francisco. In an interlude between my Liberty congregation and moving to San Lorenzo, I took the opportunity to attend basic Disaster Relief training at TBC. I earned my yellow hat and badge.
I was soon called to pastor at First Southern Baptist Church in San Lorenzo and for five years I focused on that. However, after Kim died in 2010, I decided to fill some voids and traveled down to Ventura, CA, for DR-chaplain training. I was still in grief. I stopped at Pismo Beach to walk the shoreline. I was never deployed. It was always on the back burner of my ministries.
With some encouragement from Diane and Charles Varady, I decided once again to attend DR-Chaplain training. This time it was help at Camp Oakhurst. (I traveled to a new county) I was good to spend time with Gary and Mary Nell McCoy .
A month after this training, I deployed myself to Petaluma to help out in the aftermath of the Santa Rosa fires. It was too much of a challenge to serve as a chaplain. I parked one night in my camper and served in mass feeding. I ended up doing dishes and carrying containers. That was my first and last deployment. My heart is willing, but my body feels old.
