Lesson Six: [Four Routes to the Web] We explain what it takes to be an Internet node including the pros and cons of a direct connection. We then distinguish between three indirect connections: a shell account/SLIP connection to a Web server; access through an On-line Service; and access through an Internet Service Provider (ISP). We compare and contrast the three types of indirect connections.
