Course Goals/Objectives


Students will develop skills and knowledge that are needed for educational multimedia product development by focusing on three areas; multimedia production skills (digitizing sound, graphics, animation, video/movies--as well as the use of QuickTime), authoring (PowerPoint, Digital Chisel, HyperCard), and instructional design. The goals of this course are to:
1. use multimedia production tools such as scanner, still camera, frame grabber
2. develop authoring skills HyperCard Digital Chisel
3. produce multimedia presentations (PowerPoint)
4. produce interactive programs by incorporating laserdisc, CD-ROM, and Quicktime movie
5. produce digital images (Photoshop)
6. produce digital sounds (SoundEdit 16, Sound Converter)
7. produce digital movies (FusionRecorder, MoviePlayer, Premiere)
8. explore telecommuncitions with internet, WWW, HTML editors
9. survey multimedia hardware and software


Course Requirement

The format of this course is a combination of lecture, discussion, demonstration, and hands-on. Projects must be turned in on time for full credit. No projects will be accepted after the last day of instruction. The grade will be based on the following percent weight of the various class activities.

1. Class Attendance/Participation
You must attend class. Since the course involves active participation in classroom activities and most of your class time is invested in hands-on work at a computer, discussion, and demonstration, your attendance is essential for your course grade. One absence is no problem; two absences then your highest grade is B+. Three absences then your highest grade is B; More than three absences then no credit for the course.

2. Multimedia presentation(About Me: Individual Project)
You will create a slideshow to inform me about yourself.

3.Multimedia Project (Alphabet: Group Project)
The class will collaborate and produce "An Academic Primer". I will give you more a detailed description of this project in class. Hardware/software needs: Ditgtal camera, Scanner, Photoshop, SoundEdit 16,PowerPoint

4. Digital Chisel Project (Individual Project or Group)
Select a topic of your interest. Create an instructional module following Gagne's 9 Events of Instructional Principles.Hardware/software needs: Scanner, Photoshop, SoundEdit 16, Fusion Recorder, MoviePlayer, Digital Chisel

5. HyperCard Project (Individual Project)
You will create a Hypercard Resume stack including a title card, a menu card to access information (at least three branches) about yourself, and a closing card.

    Here is an idea for your stack
  • Card #1: Your Picture with catch words
  • Card #2: Menu Screen
  • Card #3: Description of who you are
  • Card #4: Description of what you do
  • Card #5: Your hobby
  • Card #6: Closing screen with your favorite quotes

6.Interactive Video Project (Group project)Select a topic of your interest and an authoring tool of your choice. Hardware/software needs: Digital Chisel, HyperCard, laserdiscs, laserdisc player, Voager Video Toolkit, Barcode Reader

7. Multimedia Hardware/Software Survey (Individual/Group Project) Research multimedia hardware and software available currently on the market and write a report about your survey. Make a group presentation in class.

    Please include the following information in your report:
  1. Name (Hardware and software)
  2. Publisher or Maker Information
  3. Hardware (or Software) Requirement
  4. Cost
  5. A Brief Description of the product
  6. Your Evaluation Criteria

8. Final Project (Individual Project) Develop a multimedia project which incorporates digitized sound, graphics, videodisc or CD-ROM, Quicktime movie with or Digital Chisel or PowerPoint, or HTML.

    Your project should include
  1. production plan
  2. a computer software
  3. a presentation of the project.

    The production plan should include
  • Title of your project
  • Instructional goal
  • Audience characteristics
  • Objectives
  • Content map
  • Evaluation plan

Please turn in the production plan with the software when you make your class presentation. There will be a peer evauation of the final project.
