RE-FOR-GER
Return of Forces to Germany
~ January 1979 ~

This is my pass for the TAC (Tactical Operations Center)

I remember leaving Fort Leonard Wood as a Platoon Leader in the 5th Engineer Battalion. We left in the snow aboard a C130. Wet snow greeted our arrival in Germany and our tents were sagging with the weight. I melted snow in my steel pot and managed to shave. Over the next two weeks, I was driven all over Germany in a dump truck. It was amazing to see dump trucks and loaders pass through the tiny streets of German town centers. We spent the last 5 days waiting for a return flight and I went on a short bus tour of France and Luxemburg.

We arrived at our base camp with 8 inches of fresh wet snow.

During the 10-day exercise, we traveled the backroads of Germany.

We spent the last five days in run-down barracks.

Lining up for snacks.
