35 e-mails chronicling the last year of Jack's life

E-MAIL #24 ~ 11/12/07

I talked with Barb yesterday. Very good news. The graft-host reaction is controlled. The prognosis is now good. A lot of the side effects are subsiding. He has had several opportunistic infections as a result of the immune suppression and heavy duty antibiotics.

The viral infection is now controlled. One of his problems with eating was that he developed a yeast infection (thrush) in his mouth that was very painful. It is now being controlled.

It will take a while before the lining of the digestive tract heals. It is like chemo patients losing their hair. When the chemo stops, it takes a while for the hair to grow back. It will take a while for lining of the gut to grow back and not be painful.

However, the doctors changed their minds and went ahead and kept Jack in the hospital. They are now working harder at physical therapy and want to get him stronger before they discharge him.

Barbara seemed in good spirits. Keep your packages, emails, letters, and email coming.
