Baptism on Easter Sunday

A Triple Header

Kim and I have been celebrating our anniversary on March 23 for thirty-four years. (Yes, I know. I m a lucky guy.) I have been a participant in Easter celebrations for my entire life that equals 58 Easters. (Yes, I know. I m a lucky old guy). But something strange happened last Sunday something wonderful. We celebrated our anniversary and Easter on the very same day! I didn t realize this coincidence until I ripped FEBRUARY off my office calendar and circled my anniversary date. Sunday, March 23, 2008 would be a double-header.

March 23 is a very early date for Easter. As a matter of fact, the last time Resurrection Day fell on March 23 was in 1913, a few years before my parents were born. Unlike the rest of our holidays, Easter does not stay put, but hops around like an Easter bunny. That s because, the resurrection of Jesus is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon (Paschal Full Moon) after the first day of Spring (Vernal Equinox). In 2008 those three days were stacked one after the other.

But this Easter/Anniversary was even more special because I was blessed to baptize three believers in Christ. So for me this made March 23 not a double-header, but a triple-header. I baptized new believers, then I preached an Easter sermon, then I presented my wife with 34 roses. It was a good day all around.

I wanted to calculate the next time of my anniversary and Easter would fall on the same date. It turns out to be the year of our Lord 2160. By my reckoning that would be our 186th wedding anniversary. My common sense tells me that Kim and I won t be around on earth to celebrate that day. However, my sense of faith tells me that in 2160, Kim and I will exist in a realm where we will recognize one another. Maybe we will even share memories of the Easter/Anniversary that occurred 152 years earlier. It s worth waiting to see.

Weekend to Remember

A few weeks ago, three couples from church attended a weekend to remember in Monterey. This conference met on Friday evening, all day Saturday, and Sunday morning. It was sponsored by an organization called Family Life.

We learned about why marriages fail, what every marriage needs, and two becoming one. This time of listening, laughing, and meditating gave me a better appreciation for the wonderful person that I married.

Each participant was asked to write a love letter and exchange it with their spouse. As I composed my letter to Kim, I pondered how the two of us became one. I remember how opposite we were when we first met. I was a care-free Peace Corps volunteer prolonging my adolescence in Korea by teaching English as a second language. She was a serious-minded school teacher; helping to care for her family. I figure that we saw in each other what it was that we lacked in ourselves.

And maybe that s what has made our marriage work for 35 years. Obviously we were externally different, but by natural attraction Kim and I chose a mate who was internally different as well. Kim zigs where I zag, and I yin where Kim yangs. I recognize that every married couple has differences. In failing marriages, the differences cause strife. In successful marriages, the differences cause growth.

To all you married people out there, celebrate the fact that you are different than your mate. Maybe you are different as night and day. That s OK. Where would our lives be without a day and a night in balance? Finally, remember the Weekend to Remember. Participate sometime when it s near your home. You won t regret it. Just ask Chris, Kim, Brenda, Sean, Shirley, or Steve.
